Man, Missionary, Dentist, Visionary

In a remote village on the outskirts of Belmopan, Belize, Christian missionaries from Huntsville set up camp in a sparsely equipped facility built for their annual mission to give dental and medical attention to residents of this impoverished village. Roaring Creek has no electricity or running water and the floors are bare dirt, but Dr. Forrest Bryant is one of two dentists, four medical doctors, a contingent of nurses, and an ambitious construction team providing much needed services to the people in the surrounding communities. "This year, two factors allowed us to work more efficiently and help more people," explains Dr. Bryant. "In addition to the clinic, we set up a mobile dental unit and rather than relying on word of mouth, we hooked up with a local minister who acquired broadcast radio coverage." Their efforts afforded services to over 60 people per day and included cleanings, fluoride treatments, extractions, and fillings. "The exciting part about this work is to see from one year to the next, the effects of our educational efforts and the advantages to continued oral care."

Back in Huntsville, Dr. Bryant's work in dentistry evolved by ingenuity. "Dentistry changed drastically for the better around 1997. Within a year, nothing you learned in dental school still applied." Improvements in materials, medication, procedures, and equipment had dentists facing an ongoing learning curve. "My continuing education in the evolving field of cosmetic dentistry made me uniquely qualified. Reconstructing the mouth is more than replacing teeth. There is a process involved in making the jaw, gums, bone, and bite all function properly."

Dr. Bryant's unique qualifications span professional sports. He has fitted several members of the Tennessee Titans football team, as well as Michael Turner with the Atlanta Falcons, with the innovative Sports Enhancing Pure Power Mouthguard. "A properly aligned jaw is instrumental in applying power and strength," he explains. "By custom fitting the Mouthguard, any athlete has an edge in strength, power, better balance, and more range."

There are other inimitable aspects of Bryant Dental. He is one of the few remaining dentists who still does it all—from family and juvenile oral care to performing root canals, implants and treating gum disease. In addition, his Huntsville office has a distinctive atmosphere. "Originally, Huntsville was opened for reconstructive and aesthetic dental work only." Surrounded by full-length glass windows during treatment, you wait in an elegant greatroom, or on a third floor balcony, rather than a stuffy waiting room. "We are expanding that office in 2009 to include general and family dental care like we have in Decatur."

This enhanced growth includes Dr. Bryant's new partner, Dr. David J. Allen. Dr. Allen brings 24 years experience in restorative dentistry to Dr. Bryant's practice. "Dr. Allen and I share the same philosophy—we use the newest technology to provide good old-fashioned quality treatment," says Dr. Bryant, "We are not here just to ‘get patients in and out'. We provide personal attention, allow adequate time for proper treatment, and address patient concerns."

Dr. Allen is extremely caring and has a real passion for dentistry as well as the well-being of his patients. He brings 24 years of experience to those who are placed in his care. Dr. Allen is proud to display a Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State University. He furthers his knowledge of dentistry by participating in continuing education courses to include emphasis in Soft Tissue Management, TMD, Invisalign, and Lumineers.

Dr. Allen is a member of the American Dental Association as well as the MS Dental Association. He has cared for his community by serving as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher at his church and coaching little league baseball and basketball. Dr. Allen shows how big his heart is by donating his time to partcipate in dental mission trips as well. He has volunteered his dental services in rural poor areas in Honduras, Penal, Trinidad, and Peru. He also serves as a United States Navy Reserve Dentist.

In addiiton, we would like to welcome the newest member of Bryant Dental, Dr G. Patterson Shedd, DMD from our new Madison Office

Dr. Shedd is originally from Mobile AL. He is an Undergraduate at Birmingham-Southern College with a B.S. in Biology-Psychology. Dr. Shedd attended dental school at UAB, graduating in 2008. He completed a one year residency (Advanced Education in General Dentistry or AEGD) at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham where he received greater education in the field of general dentistry, particularly treating patients with multiple medical concerns. Dr. Shedd is currently a member of the ADA and ALDA. He also serves as an Alabama District Representative on the Committee of the New Dentist, which focuses on helping dentists who have been out of school 10 years or less become more involved in organized dentistry. "In my spare time, I enjoy being on the water, playing golf, and playing guitar."
